Youth Under 12 require a mature guardian (sibling) or a parent.

This program encourages sewers, both boys and girls, to celebrate the multi layered qualities they each possess.
It's through the process of stiching and ripping that we truly discover our unique identity, and in turn we hope to inspire others to dress in their own individual style.
Create your own wearable art with recylced clothing, fabrics and paraphernalia!
***We encourage you to bring your own sewing art kit, and a sewing machine - we have many participants and not enough supplies to go around.
Facilitated by Steph Toohill and Room Supervisor Chelsea Campbell
A sewing kit can be purchased at Zellers (Fergus), Lens Mill or Fabricland, both located in Guelph. Let us know if we can pick one up for you!

ART IS IN THEIR FUTURE
by Barbara Sgroi
They will remember it as the summer they found their passion – that unforgettable moment when your heart pounds, your knees turn to Jell-o and you know, you just know that your life is about to change.
“It has been such an amazing experience. I had no idea where my life was going or what I wanted to do,” recalls Brianna Hastie, 18, of Elora, one of a handful of students given the opportunity to be part of the Youth Arts and Entertainment Council at the Elora Centre for the Arts, and who are confidently looking forward to a career in the arts.
“I discovered what I was good at and what I loved to do,” says Brianna, a student in her final year at CWDHS with her sights set on studying drama at the University of Toronto.
Thanks to funding support from both local Rotary Clubs, and the guidance of Education Programme Coordinator, Roisin Gormley-Young, the Youth Council provides local students with the opportunity to discover and develop their own creative talents, mentored by professional artists. This summer, the students also helped with events at the Centre and created a permanent studio space where young artists and performers can meet.
“For years, I have wanted to learn and create in my own way, but could never find the right place or atmosphere to do so,” recalls Brianna. “When I was younger, I went to a very sports-oriented school, but the athletic world just wasn’t part of who I was, who I am, or who I want to be. During my month-long co-op, and then as an ECftA camp leader, I was surrounded by optimistic, creative people who had the same artistic interests as I did – it felt like home.”
A sentiment echoed by fellow co-op student Rebekah Young, 17, of Fergus, who admits that although she was always told she was talented, “I didn’t have the slightest clue how to express that talent.”
Until now. During her month-long high school co-op position, Rebekah helped manage the Minarovich Gallery, an experience that taught her about the business of art.
“I had never thought about how you have to sell yourself as an artist,” she explains. “In a way, the co-op was more like an entrepreneurship than an internship.” Rebekah was also involved with the Teen Photography Workshop, assisting pro photographer Sylvia Galbraith teach aspiring photographers how to use Adobe Photoshop.
Now a grade 12 CWDHS student majoring in drama, Rebekah looks back on her summer at the Centre as a time when she “grew socially as an artist and as a person.”
Mark Snetzko also had a “that’s IT!” moment. Although he was already passionate about drama and art when he started his two-month gig as events co-ordinator at ECftA last summer (a paid position through the Ontario Government’s Summer Experience programme), it didn’t take long for the 18-year-old to realize that he had lucked into a life-changing opportunity.
“I learned so much, and had so much fun,” he says with an ear-to-ear grin. “I got paid to do what I loved!” He is now in his first year of drama at the University of Toronto. Working at the Centre as a camp leader, Mark taught drama to families, helped kids with their production of Hamlet, assisted at day camp, and was involved in advertising and organizing for the Centre’s Art in the Yard event.

A Room of our own! July 2nd/2009 By member Brianna Hastie. A lot has happened with our YAEC group. Including our own room located in the centre! This room is open for new members to come and check out, however it will be undergoing some "construction" to make it our own. Here are some things the council has taken a vote on to get things going. Our choosen paint colour will be a lovely, solid, neutral colour to accent the artwork that will be put on display. In terms of set up: There will be a kitchen area set up in the Northwest corner, a common/meeting area set up in the middle of the room, and a supervisors desk set up in the Southeast corner of the room. Also, along the North and East walls there will be folding desks so anyone can work on projects that might need to be finished. There will also be designated walls for each arts disipline. Such as, a wall for music some of our members have written or simply recommend, visual art work members have created and a wall designated to upcoming YAEC and Centre events. All this and much more will be coming at you very fast. So come on out and see what we have done. We would love to have you!
