Calling all artists of any level, that wish to work from a live model, (sometimes clothed - sometimes not), with a few short poses leading into one longer pose. Please come to the Stage Room at the Centre on the first Sunday at 9am to register, with cash only. Bring your own supplies (any medium), easel and beverage. Set-up and tear down will be a group effort.

Discover the magic of creating a masterpiece with your own hands. Beginner and Intermediate students are welcome to come to the mud room and experiment, play, learn new skills, be inspired and get dirty. Supplemented by visual resources and discussions, you may find that the world of clay is bigger than you think. For beginners we will cover pinch, slab and coiling methods, and try out the potter’s wheel. If you have some experience, why not pick up where you left off, or focus on your favourite methods. No class March 17.
Instructor
Jane Neff has a bachelor of Architecture from Carleton University, with a focus on design and gardens. She has experience in earthenware, Raku and functional stoneware. Combining wheel and hand building techniques is of special interest, and has shared her techniques in workshops for other potters, as well as high school students. Her award winning work has been exhibited in group shows, retail venues and galleries, such as: Elora Fergus Studio Tour, Art in the Yard, Arcadia Community Gallery, The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery and the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto. http://www.canadianclayandglass.ca/images/nefffeathervases.jpg

 

PASTEL PAINTING  - A10W2

This one day workshop offers an opportunity to learn the basic techniques of using pastels. You will learn how to work with soft chalk pastels to make your choice of bold and vibrant paintings, or more subdued paintings. From still life arrangements, the student will have an opportunity to explore colour theory, and the layered application of colour. This course is suitable for both beginner and intermediate students. Knowledge of basic drawing is recommended.

Leslie Miles holds a BA in Fine Art from the University of Guelph, Fashion at Ryerson and an Advanced Certificate in Fashon Illustration and Design from St.Martin’s School of Art in England. Leslie has taught drawing and pastels for the City of Guelph, Wellington County Museum and the MacDonald Stewart Art Centre. Supplies to bring: 1 sheet of “Canson” Paper for pastels (preferably not too dark in coulour), 1 box of NuPastels, 12 colours, approximate price: $15, 1 plastic eraser, 1 kneadable eraser.
 
HOW TO DRAW - A10W1A

If you are an absolute beginner or just a little rusty, get back into the swing of it by learning from a pro! Learn how to transfer what you see on to paper with techniques in measuring and observation with the comfort of a relaxed and meditative environment. You will use charcoal, graphite and conte crayon to draw a range of subject matter: still life, interior space, and portrait.   *See below for supplies required. Draw from a live model and add-on Tues. INTERMEDIATE PAINTING - A10W4
Thurs. January 21 to March 4
7pm to 9:30pm
$110 Member / $125 Non
This class combines in-class instruction with painting sessions and critique. Instruction will cover topics ranging from colour theory and paint handling to form and composition. Students will work from a subject(s) of their choice. Previously unresolved work or challenging subjects are encouraged. Any painting media, such as: acrylic, oil or watercolour, are accepted – be sure to bring your own painting equipment and materials each week.

Eileen MacArthur completed her Masters in Painting at the University of Guelph and received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Eileen has had exhibitions in Halifax, Calgary, Toronto, Buffalo N.Y, Chongqing, China and Guelph's MacDonald Stewart Art Centre. Eileen has taught classes at the University of Guelph, the Elora Centre for the Arts and the Guelph School of Art. In 2009 her work was included in the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery biennial, "Some Kind of Wonderful". CONTEMPORARY PAINTING - A10W3 Cancelled

This course introduces beginner and intermediate artists to the fundamentals of colour and design. Instruction, demonstrations, and exercises will focus on concept, composition and the use of colour as a mode of expression. Students will experiment with acrylic paint, mediums, surfaces, techniques and processes, developing both technical skills and a colour and design vocabulary along the way.

Instructor
Marilyn Koop has worked as a designer, illustrator and fine artist since 1983. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design, she left Ontario for St. John’s, Newfoundland, where she helped found Eastern Edge Gallery. In 2004, Marilyn helped found The Village Idiot Productions, an Elora based artist-run production company. She has taught design at several post secondary institutions, including Avalon Community College and the Memorial University Extension Program in St. John’s and Western Community College in Stephenville, Newfoundland. She has also taught at the Guelph School of Art, the ECFTA, and the Wellington County Museum.

The GOLDEN Acrylic Lecture Demo is a fun, fast paced informative lecture covering a technical review of acrylics and their varied application possibilities. The lecture demo will present information on pigments, viscosities, gels, mediums and more. Learn how acrylics can be used as a ground for other media, such as watercolour or coloured pencil. PHOTOGRAPHY WITH SYLVIA GALBRAITH

Sylvia Galbraith is a recognized professional photographer whose work sells worldwide. She has taught photography to all age groups in many locations, including the University of Toronto, Humber College, and the University of Brandon, MB, as well as locally. She has won many awards and occasionally shows at various venues; Insights 2007, '08 & '09 at the Wellington County Museum, Summer Sensations Artwalk in Fergus and most recently at the Centre’s Art in the Yard ‘09, where Sylvia won the “Jurors Choice Award”. WINTER LANDSCAPES - PHOTOGRAPHY - A10W6

Meet at The Elora Centre for the Arts for a discussion regarding the unique challenges of winter photography, exposures & lighting in bright snow, protecting your equipment from the cold, and more. The last half of the workshop will be spent outdoors in a local park. Bring your camera, tripod, extra batteries, hot beverage of your choice (optional) and wear your winter woolies - we will be outside for about 1 ½ hours. Suitable for all skill levels, film or digital.

 

BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY - A10W7

This four night course will cover a range of topics for the beginner photographer. We will discuss the principles of photography and cover topics such as types of cameras, camera settings, lenses, ISO, determining exposure & aperture, using filters & accessories, working with composition, lighting, and more. Each week you will receive a practice assignment, which will be (gently) critiqued the following week. Bring your camera to each class. Suitable for both film & digital photographers. 4 weeks.
 

INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY  - A10W8

A continuation of the Basic Level course, incorporating a variety of topics that will challenge your imagination and help develop your individual style. We will work with advanced camera settings, including shooting in RAW, fine-tuning exposure, working in black & white, photographing moving subjects and more. Learn about portraiture, macro photography, post-processing and printing your images using specialty papers. Includes a field trip, location & date to be decided in class. Please bring your: SLR style camera, film or digital, each week. (No class Mar. 17) Pre-requisite: Basic Photo or equivalent skills. 4 weeks.
 

FROM CAMERA TO COMPUTER 1 - A10W9

You’ve filled your memory card with great photos…now what? Instructor Sylvia Galbraith will help you learn different ways to upload your photos to your computer, organize files, create backup copies and more. You will learn basic photo editing skills and how to resize your images for e-mail or print. This course is valuable for artists who create digital files for gallery submissions. This course does not require a computer in class.
