Youth Art Classes
PA Day and March Break Art Camps -- Spring 2012
YOUNG IMPRESSIONISTS 5-7 year olds
Saturdays, April 14 – June 9, 2012, 8 weeks * No class on May 19, 2012
10:00am – 12noon
$90 Members / $105 Non-members
This class pops up each season with new themes and concepts that aim to inspire and promote creativity in young artists.
Kids learn basic art making skills based on “Themed” projects. Learn about space, line, colour, shape, texture, form, value and pattern.
Art projects incorporate these elements and teach youth about different mediums used for drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpting.
Please note that each season will be different and may not include all of the above.
Repeat students are encouraged!
Dress for mess and please bring a nut-free snack each week.

YOUTH DRAW, PAINT & SCULPT! 8-11 year olds

Youth can try your hand at brush handling, tonal drawings, design and composition while experimenting with various mediums.
Learn how to piece together your own finished drawings and paintings of portraits, still lifes and landscapes.
New to this program is the addition of sculpture. Projects will be adapted to suit the group’s needs.Please bring a smock/apron & a snack. Supplies included. Instructor: Lois Scott
GLEE CLUB 7–12 year olds

If your son or daughter has a love for singing and lean ring new songs, Glee Club is the place to be! The Glee Club explores the basic concepts of music through musical games and crafts, learning to play rhythm instruments and moving to beat. Free expression is encouraged to explore the power of music and develop a foundation for the love of singing. Come and Have Fun! Glee Club is a time to learn new songs and sing together!
The Winter session of Glee Club will he highlighting songs from the Lion King! Experience the rhythms of the Pride Lands, Melodies from African Chant, Language of the Zulu and more! All classes are held at the Elora Centre for the Arts.

Instructor: Anne Thomson-King. Anne has worked with numerous children’s groups as a vocal teacher, camp instructor and workshop facilitator. She studied at the esteemed Royal Conservatory of Music, has performed with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Festival Singers of Canada and as a host on TVO’s Polka Dot Door.
Glee Club is open to youth between the ages of 7-12.
The last night of each session finishes with a final performance to celebrate the group’s accomplishments.

PA Day Art Camps offer children a buffet of the arts! Projects are geared to all ages and adapted to fit the attending student’s needs and desires. This year we are asking campers come dressed in the “Colour of the Day!”
Projects will vary each day with focus on drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, drama and storytelling.
Please bring nut-free snacks, lunch and a re-useable water bottle. Space is limited and pre-registration required.

NURSERY RHYME THEATRE 3-5 year olds

Act out nursery rhymes and fairy tales, sing songs, play games and finally perform a Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme play for family and friends. All supplies included. Parents are free to leave after drop-off. Performance is June 13, 2012 at 4:30pm.

OSCATS! Improv Drama/ Theatre Group 9 years +
Wednesdays, March 21 - May 9, 2012, 8 weeks
4:00pm to 5:30pm.

Totally unscripted and uninhibited! The magic of OSCATS! encourages youth to jump right in and immerse their creative selves into the world of IMPROV while finding confidence using their inner voice. Youth are supported to direct their own projects using costumes, masks and some curious props. They will film their pieces to document their journeys into comedy, commercials, talk shows, skits and video journaling. There will be an emphasis on social justice and local history with exercises in tableau, choreography, miming, creative movement and percussion while finding their roots and voice in the community. Comfortable clothes, a nut free snack and water bottle recommended. Showcase Finale for friends and family on last day at 5pm.

The TuTu-ers” are an inspiring group of young people who creatively sew
together at the Elora Centre for the Arts, in the Youth Rotary Room.
These creative individuals encourage each other to wear and create clothes that they feel best represent who they are, regardless of high fashion images. They compassionately support and learn from each other’s lives and differences.
Through stitching pieces together of recycled clothing, materials, textiles and bit’s & bob’s “Tu Tu-ers” discover and express their multi-layered, unique identities while inspiring us all to stand tall in who we are.
No experience Necessary! Everyone is welcome to join this expanding and dynamic group that love to design and sew!

PIRATES, MERPEOPLE & MORE! 4 to 7 years
Aye matey’s, all aboard an adventure in pirate culture! Try out some super neat-o flat and three dimensional projects that are themed around the open waters! Create water snakes with dots and lines; build your own three dimensional treasure chest that can hold all of your artwork! Why not hide the treasure chest but first make a really old treasure map. We’ll make seascapes out of collage, pirate flags for our imaginary ships, foam mosaics, woven vases and a miniature ship in a bottle. We aim to inspire and ignite a passion for all things fishy!!! Join us on our trek through the world of pirates!!

COLOUR ADVENTURES 8 to 12 years
Youth will love diving into the wonderful world of COLOUR! Start with the basics and learn how to make a handy dandy colour wheel. You will become a pro when it comes to mixing, matching and applying colour. Colour creates different moods and atmospheres such as using cool and warm combinations and pairing certain colour hues together. Try your hand at super fun projects such as: Andy Warhol multi-coloured portraits, Bazaar Collages, 2D Gargoyles, colourful sculptures, pastel landscapes and moody, black & white Ink Drawings. Come away with a completed colour portfolio!

Camp Themes for 4-7 year olds:
Week One: August 13-17, 2012: Ancient Civilizations
Get ready to step into our art-tastic time machine as we take a trip to great civilizations of the past! Whether it be making your very own Mummies or journeying under the sea to visit the ruins of Atlantis, youth will love learning about the mysterious realms of history while creating authentic artifacts from their adventures. Pyramids, the Parthenon and Easter Island; we will explore then all. Let's go!

Week Two: August 20-24, 2012: Earth and Space
Houston we've landed! Join in as we fly to the moon and beyond, exploring deep space and it's many stars and planets. Youth will become the Martians on Mars as they create their own alien masks and design a planet utopia to live. Let's not forget about our home planet; inspired by natures many wonders, kids will learn to plaint landscapes and make collages using the organic materials around them, all the while gaining knowledge on how to take care of Earth and preserve it for the future.

Week Three: August 27-31, 2012: Where the Wild Things Are
Grrr, arg! Don't be afraid as youth get messy and explore all things WILD! Monsters, mayhem and all around silliness is our muse through a week of fun filled arts, crafts and games. From projects inspired by Maurice Sendak's classic tale Where the Wild Things Are, to a wild 80s rock band, kids will let their inner monster out as they become their favourite wild animals, design whimsical worlds and show their crazy moves in a music video debut!

Camp Themes for 8-12 year olds:
Week One: August 13-17, 2012: Ancient Greece, Drama and Theatre Studies Camp
Youth will learn how to get in touch with themselves through physical and vocal exercises, learning how to "Let go!" through different drama games and activities. Not only will they get to try out Improv games and learn about healthy competition, campers will learn some theatre history and huge masks similar to ones used in Ancient Greece! On Friday afternoon, youth will use their knowledge from the past week, their handmade masks, and their own stories to perform for family and friends in the Centre's Stage Room!

Week Two: August 20-24, 2012: Graffiti and Comics, Fine Arts and Craft Studies
This camp is perfect for young artists interested in illustration and animation, as well as youth looking for new ways to express themselves through the use of visual arts. They will learn basic figure drawings, using all types of medium and material to make their creations. Campers will learn about taking art out into the streets with graffiti and how to use nature to make a masterpiece! Not only that, but youth will learn about different comics styles, ranging from super heroic to silly cartoons to Japanese anime! After a week of creating, the students will be able to make a BIG impression on the town of Elora This camp is sure to surprise campers who may not realize their full potential -- yet!

Week Three: August 27-31, 2012: Cammedia dell'Arte, Drama & Theatre Arts
Youth will learn about the body: the actor's instrument! They will discover how to manipulate their bodies to create a variety of different characters and learn about great theatre innovators like Laban and Chekhov. After doing different vocal and physical exercises to warm up their imaginations, youth will delve into the theatrical world of Italy, learning about Commedia dell'Arte! They will get to use authentic masks that resemble different Commedia characters and use physical and vocal techniques to get in character. After forming their own skit using "lazzi", campes will perform their masterpieces in front of family and friends on Friday afternoon in the Stage Room.

INSTRUCTOR BIOS:
MEREDITH BLACKMORE was “drawn” to the arts at a young age. From the ages 9 to 13 she trained in professional dance and in her later teens worked as an airbrush artist. In the ten years since completing a Fine Arts degree from the University of Guelph, Meredith has been specializing in portrait and mural painting. She has delivered many programs in music, movement and visual arts. Meredith was recently the winner of Bravo’s STAR PORTRAITS for her rendering of Principal Dancer Rex Harrington. http://gallerymeredith.googlepages.com
CHELSEA CAMPBELL is the youth coordinator at the Elora Centre for the Arts, leading programs such as the Youth Arts & Entertainment Council, the Tu Tu in You with Steph Lines-Toohill and the Rural Artist Project as part of a grant from the Laidlaw Foundation. Chelsea has taught courses for children including PA Days, March Break and Summer Camp. Her extensive experience with children has led her to volunteer with the Elora Co-Op Preschool as an Inclusion Facilitator.
KELLA FLACH has been a co-op student, summer experience student, March Break and Summer Camp leader and young artist instructor at the Elora Centre for the Arts over the past two years. Kella is always attempting projects in various mediums. During her spare time she is studying to become an interior designer. She has attended courses in Crafts & Design Furniture at Sheridan College. Kella is a young entrepreneur, owning her own festival tent company “Creo Events”. Visit her site at www.creoevents.ca.
BRIANNA HASTIE Brianna is currently a student at The University Of Windsor where she is completing a B.A. Honours in Theatre. She has been involved with the Elora Centre For The Arts since 2008 and has been a camp leader with the centre since 2009. She is a lover of music, performance art, and any kind of visual art she can get her hands on. Brianna is extremely excited for the different summer camps the centre is offering and can't wait to get her hands a little dirty!
AL KOOP has been involved in various children's arts programs including Lightbulb Factory, Imagination Station, Oscats and his own troupe of street actors called "Older Voices". They perform at outdoor festivals, school events and other community venues. The "Older Voices" historical lantern walks have become well-known in Elora and Fergus. As a writer, Al has published two history books, written several plays and contributed many essays to "Wellington County History". His current projects include cultural mapping research and writing a series of articles related to changing food tastes along the upper Grand, home remedies and patent medicines in the 19th century. http://oldervoices.blogspot.com/
EILEEN MACARTHUR completed her Masters in Painting at the University of Guelph and received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Eileen has had exhibitions in Halifax, Calgary, Toronto, Buffalo N.Y, Chongqing, China and Guelph's MacDonald Stewart Art Centre. Eileen has taught classes at the University of Guelph, the Elora Centre for the Arts and the Guelph School of Art. In 2009 her work was included in the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery biennial, "Some Kind of Wonderful". Recently she received special mention as a finalist for the 2009 Kingston Prize National Portrait Competition. www.eileenmacarthur.com
JANE NEFF has a Bachelor of Architecture from Carleton University. She has experience in earthenware, Raku and functional stoneware. Combining wheel and hand building techniques is of special interest, and has shared her techniques in workshops for other potters, as well as, high school students. Her award winning work has been exhibited in group shows, retail venues and galleries, such as the Elora Fergus Studio Tour, Art in the Yard, Arcadia Community Gallery, The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery and the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto.
LOIS SCOTT is a local hot glass sculptor and mixed media artist, having studied Craft, Fibre and Glass Design at Sheridan College, Business at Wilfred Laurier, Psychology at the University of Waterloo and Theatre/Dance at Ryerson Polytechnic University. Lois has been a teacher, Programme Coordinator, Artist in Residence and Committee Member at numerous places; KWAG, Mississauga Living Arts Centre, Gallery Stratford, Canadian Clay & Glass Studio. Her artwork is prominently placed in public/private collections and galleries from Canada to Japan.
ANNE THOMSON KING graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music with an ARCT in voice performance. At Wilfrid Laurier University she participated in classes of vocal coaching and music therapy. Choral groups including the Festival Singers of Canada and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir were a start to her professional career in music. From there she performed in classical recitals, Scottish concerts and with Operatic companies. To add to her eclectic interest, she had lead roles in musicals, including My Fair Lady, Showboat, Brigadoon and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Her love of many forms of vocal music gives a varied approach to the musical experience.
She has conducted children’s choirs, directed children’s shows and pageants. She has sung on a Celtic TV show and performed on Polka Dot Door. Having a varied career in vocal music, she wants to give her enthusiasm to young minds so that they will grow sharing with each other in music.
STEPH LINES-TOOHILL has been teaching creative movement, improvisational youth drama and exploring textile art using recycled materials over the past six years. She champions curiosity and learning from diversity whilst encouraging youth of all ages to use their imagination and mentorship skills to problem solve together. Steph is an avid supporter of weaving community through local food, community projects and fund raising events.
